The Oklahoma City Thunder have announced its final roster before the regular season tips off Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz.
In a news release, the team announced that they had released the following players: Mamadi Diakite, Justin Jaworski, and Oliver Sarr.
The Thunder successfully claimed Diakite off waivers last month from the Milwaukee Bucks. It was announced this past week that he suffered a left hip fracture against his former team in a preseason contest.
Those injuries usually take months to recover from, and fully returning to normal isn’t a guarantee. Hence, it made sense to release the 24-year-old and not waste a roster spot even if some within the organization were a fan of his.
Jaworski and Sarr join a long list of players that the Thunder signed and then quickly waived to retain their G League rights. Other players who underwent the same process this training camp include Rob Edwards, DJ Wilson, Jaylen Hoard, Melvin Frazier Jr., Scotty Hopsin, and Zavier Simpson.
All of these players will be given a chance to play for the OKC Blue this season. Both Thunder and Blue play their home games at Paycom Center, making this idea much more feasible and attractive.
So the official roster is set. 17 players total: 15 NBA guys and two two-way players:
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, Josh Giddey, Theo Maledon, Ty Jerome, Tre Mann
Aleksej Pokusevski, Darius Bazley, Kenrich Williams, Gabriel Deck, Aaron Wiggins, Vit Krejci, Paul Watson Jr.
Derrick Favors, Isaiah Roby, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Mike Muscala
In Saturday's post-practice presser, Thunder Head Coach Mark Daigneault mentioned that the team still hasn’t decided on a starting center for the regular season. He has talked all training camp and preseason that the starting center position is the most fluid of the five.
With that said, it seems like these four are locks to be on the court when the game tips off:
SGA/ Dort/ Giddey/ Baze
