Gilgeous-Alexander cruises, Dort’s triple gives OKC its second win in three games

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

It was Luguentz Dort who drilled the last second corner three-pointer to seal a 102-99 win over the San Antonio Spurs (16-12) Wednesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

But it was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who made the right play.

Even after scoring a career-high 42 points, Gilgeous-Alexander let the game dictate the most efficient outcome during the clutch time scenario.

Gilgeous-Alexander inbounded the ball to center Al Horford with just over three seconds remaining and rather than trying to get it back to force a shot, SGA watched as Horford himself made a bright decision, driving the lane before kicking to Dort for the wide-open triple.

SGA went 13-for-20 from the floor, including 6-for-11 from the three-point range. He also finished with eight rebounds and four assists and went 10-for-11 from the free-throw line to help the team whether an up-and-down night offensively.

The Thunder (13-19) battled back in the second half after entering halftime down 45-40.

OKC scored 62 points after the break, fueled by 25 from Gilgeous-Alexander and 12 apiece from Dort and Horford. It was a Dort three-pointer midway through the third quarter followed by a four-point play by SGA that kick-started OKC’s late run.

Dort and Horford each finished with 16 points. Dort’s 4-for-7 effort from long range helped the Thunder withstand a cold spurt before the second half. Horford’s presence was felt as well with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Prior to the turnaround, the Thunder scored just 12 points in the second quarter and struggled throughout the first 24 minutes. OKC shot just 32% in the first half.

San Antonio shot over 46% from the field throughout the game and even shot over 54% in the second half. It wasn’t enough to hold off the Thunder who reeled off their second win in three games.

Oklahoma City looks to make it two straight wins Friday against Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks before closing the homestand against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
