OPINION: Fans shouldn’t select the NBA All-Star starters

The initial returns of All-Star voting are in and it does not look good for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. SGA does not rank in the top-10 of fan voting despite having an All-Star level this season.

Players such as Alex Caruso, CJ McCollum, and Klay Thompson have all received more votes than the young Canadian.

The tallies highlight a key issue with fan voting being a core part of the All-Star voting process.

In the nicest possible way, the majority of fans do not follow the league closely enough to make an informed decision about the All-Star game.

This is how Klay Thompson, who has not played at all this season, and Alex Caruso, a meme, has received a ton of votes.

Personally, I believe that fan voting should be removed from All-Star voting.

The All-Star should be a reward for the best players in the NBA, not the most popular players.

Currently, Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and the Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant are currently leading their respective conferences.

The Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry and the Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal lead their respective position groups.

It should be noted that fans account for 50% of the votes, while the media and coaches also get a say.
